Koi Fish Breeding Process

Breeding of Koi Fish

Koi carp naturally breed on their own, and they tend to spawn in the summer, and spring seasons. The Male fish will start following the female fish, by swimming right behind her and nudging her. After that, female koi releases her eggs, and they sink to the bottom of the pond and stay there. There is a sticky outer shell around the egg helps to keep it in place so it does not float around. Although the female fish can produce many spawns, most of the fries do not survive due to being eaten by others.

Just like other fishes, koi does reproduction through spawning in which a female fish lays a large number of eggs and one or more males fertilize them. A koi breeder may carefully select the parent koi fish they wish to breed based on their desired characteristics.

For breeding koi in the fish tank, first place the female koi. Give her some time to get comfortable with the environment. Then place a net over the breeding tank because once koi begins to breed, the process will become violent and aggressive. Otherwise, the koi fish will end up in the floor. Just like human beings they also need space and privacy when it comes to breeding.
